CORRECTIONS TO CECIL CHARLES SPILLER INTERVIEW PUBLISHED IN
BRUN CAMPBELL THE ORIGINAL RAGTIME KID BY LARRY KARP

Larry was on a deadline,  he was ill and his days were very numbered.  I did not know this.  I offered to let him publish one of my Cecil Spiller interviews on Brun and he was thrilled but needed it very quickly.  I was not able to do that and was going to bow out but I decided to send him the audio from the video and he used a voice transcription program.  Because of this, some words were not properly interpreted.  Also with an abrupt deadline ahead there was no time for me to see the transcription or make corrections.
I brought this to Larry's attention when the book was published and he was upset over the errors.  I told him we can fix it in a second edition.  He told me, there isn't going to be a second edition.  I was stunned by his remark but then got suspicious something may be wrong.  Larry died not long after the book was published.  I was shocked when I heard the news but then it confirmed my grave notion.

Cecil was hard of hearing at this time.  I had to repeat some of my questions to him.

p. 232  line 20   “Dave [unintelligible]”  should be “Dave Caughren”.   [Thanks to Konrad Nowakowski.]
p 233 line 42  There should be no question mark after “huh”.  More like  “Hmm” [meaning “interesting”]
p 234  line 3  Cecil’s name should be in bold, and to left margin
p 235  line 1  “Found he did” should be “Probably he did, like Jelly Roll Morton.”
p. 235  line 16   “Phil Kaufman” should be “Bill Coffman”
p. 235  line 24  “Phil” should be “Bill”
p. 235  line 35  Cecil’s name should be bold and to left margin (“The what?”)
p. 236  line 30  Should be “with all of that Jelly Roll stuff.” (meaning foot stomping)
p. 236  lines 34 & 35  “Jeff Stacey”  should be “Jess Stacy”
p. 238  line 33  Cecil’s name should be bold and to left margin (“Tom Turpin”)
p. 238  lines 39 & 41 Although I said 1906, I misspoke.  The proper date is 1908.
